Dear PCCS Families:
We wanted to provide you with an update on the Common Core implementation at PCCS. A shift in standards is currently taking place in Illinois and across the country. Illinois, along with forty-four other states, are shifting from their state standards to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The CCSS are a rigorous set of standards for the English Language Arts and Mathematics curriculum that has been developed based on the best practices of schools and organizations around the country and the world. These standards come with new practices and applications for students. The standards are designed to do the following:
o Prepare students for college and career readiness by aligning with college and work expectations;
o Each grade level will focus on key topics, with a coherent learning progression across each grade level;
o Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order thinking skills;
o Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards;
o Use strategies from other top-performing countries so that all students are prepared to succeed in a global economy and society; and
o Be evidence-based.
To assist parents and schools the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has constructed a Hot Topics page to provide additional and a deeper understanding. To learn more about how PCCS has incorporated CCSS, click here.
We invite you to take an active role as our partners in education, in supporting your children and our school in this initiative. Parent support in education is instrumental in their children’s success and we encourage you to review the information we have provided and feel free to ask questions and learn more about the Common Core State Standards.

Our environmental integrated curriculum breaks down traditional barriers between subjects and makes learning more meaningful to students.
We teach interdisciplinary units around environmental themes with which
our students can identify. This permits interrelationships and interactions
with the knowledge and skills from all content areas.
