Ms. Heyl

Grade: ML Teacher K-2

Nicole Heyl believes that education is a collaborative adventure, one that thrives on curiosity, respect, and joyful discovery.  Nicole was drawn to Prairie Crossing Charter School’s commitment to teaching the whole child by using the power of the natural world around them.  She is excited for the chance to learn and work alongside fellow educators who believe in constructivist and restorative teaching practices.   Nicole comes to PCCS with over twenty years of classroom experience, specializing in play-based learning and culturally responsive teaching in a myriad of school settings.   She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education with a focus in Social Studies instruction from Purdue University Calumet, and a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education with a specialization in ESL education from Erikson Institute.  Her graduate capstone project focused on the cultural socialization and determinations of school readiness.  Ms. Heyl continues to strive to understand how home and community backgrounds shape young learners’ early academic journeys.  Nicole’s commitment to excellence is highlighted by her recent selection by leaders at Erikson Institute to be amongst fifteen alumni to pilot the Social Emotional Learning Certification program beginning September 2025.  Beyond the classroom, she serves as the choir director at her home church and is actively involved as a vocal director and youth theatre instructor in local community theatres.  Her favorite thing outside of work is being a mom and spending time with her daughter exploring museums and other historically significant sites.  Nicole is an avid “Wizard of Oz” fan, and her favorite quote is said by Glinda: “you had the power all along, my dear. You just had to learn it for yourself.”  Her goal at PCCS is to work alongside staff and families to nurture resilient, compassionate learners who are equipped to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
