Ms. Hahn’s Newsletter

Attendance
Please have your child log into my class Zoom by 8 am for attendance. Your child should be logged in to Zoom for lessons throughout the day. If your child will be absent, please email the office, myself, and Mrs. Steinbeck. Please have your child go straight to PE on Tuesdays. If your child goes to another teacher at 8:00, please go directly to that teacher.
Reading
This past week the students learned about retelling stories and visualizing while reading. We added notes to the reading notebook about these important reading skills. I encourage you to ask your child what he/she is picturing while reading. This week the students will review those skills. Mrs. Steinbeck will be reading a few Monarch or Bluestem books while the students practice reading skills.
Writing
Students have spent a lot of time researching a woodland animal. They found a lot of information using books on Epic. After they finished researching, the students began the first draft of their report. Students are working on the reports again this coming week.
Math
A variety of addition and subtraction problems were solved during math. The students were able to share different strategies to find the answer. Students played math workplace games with a partner in zoom breakout rooms to practice addition. Next week we will wrap up Unit 1 and take an assessment. Unit 2 is about multiplication. I will include the Bridges Family letter to Unit 2 with this newsletter. Some activities may be altered due to virtual teaching.
Science
On Monday, the students learned more about trees and the parts of a tree. This connected to the lessons from the previous week. They saw examples of tree rings. The examples included different sizes of the rings and sometimes damage to the rings. The rest of the week focused on our woodland animal project. Friday Naomi taught the class about how scientist identifies a tree.
Spelling/Word Work
This week we will begin word work using Words Their Way spelling. The students will all be in Lesson 13 this week. The sort was given in the papers in the last material pick up. I will go over the sort and the activities for spelling with the class. Students are expected to study the words this week for a test on Friday. I will send out more information about spelling/word work very soon.
Spelling will be stored in the reading folder and notebook. Your child will need an envelope or bag to put the cut out words.
Computers
If your child needs a Chromebook, please let the office know. The school can issue you a Chromebook for remote learning. Many of the 3rd-grade activities may be difficult to do on an IPAD. Some families who already had a tablet or IPAD use that for Zoom and the school
Chromebook for assignments. It is important that your child always use Google Chrome and log into their school account.
Curriculum Night
Thank you for those that could attend the curriculum night via Zoom. In the last material pick up was a brochure about our curriculum. I have emailed the presentation for those unable to attend.
NWEA
The students will be taking NWEA tests this fall. Next week the students will be practicing getting logged onto the test site and taking a practice test. All students should be on a computer, not an IPAD for testing. More information is coming about the testing and specific dates. Below are the steps we will be doing next week.
