Reading

Students began reading groups this week.  All groups are reading nonfiction books.  The students are reviewing the features of nonfiction books and how these features help us understand the information.  The students read the book and answer questions about the book in reading group.  Next week the students will finish these nonfiction books.

This week I read to the students different fables.  They tried to guess the lesson/moral from each fable.  Next week we will learn how to recount the important details from a book.

Math

Students reviewed addition and subtraction of three digit numbers this past week.  It is important students know their addition and subtraction math facts.  Please practice these with your child at home, if your child does not have them memorized.  Next week we will spend a few days on subtraction and then move onto graphing.

Science

We continued learning about trees this week.  The students learned how to identify a tree by looking at the leaves.  Naomi came to teach the students how to use a dichotomous key.  Students used the key to try to identify the tree.  The students also learned about tree cookies and had an opportunity to observe different tree cookies.  Next week the students will be introduced to the wetland habitat.

Please remember to have your child play math games at home at least two times a week.  Please indicate your child played the math games above the spelling list under reminders.

Writing

The students added sensory details to their free choice writing.  We examined how authors use sensory details in their writing.  Students began a woodland animal research project.  The students used books to find information.  Next week the children will learn more about their animal on the computer.  After the research is done, the students will be using Google slides to present their information.

Other

Please remember to send your child with a water bottle to school.  They might have PE outside and will need to drink water.

If your child decides to be in the band, your child will miss class.  It is the student’s responsibility to make up any missed work due to band lessons.

Please look at our class webpage for pictures and information posted by Mrs. Steinbeck.  There are also math games that we played in class.

Dress code for PCCS says that students cannot wear legging to school.  All shorts must be mid-thigh.

Computers

All students now have a gmail account.  This account is only used for searching the web and using Google docs.  They do NOT have email.  The students also have an account for typing.com and Raz kids.  You will find all the login information in the cover of the assignment notebooks.  If you have a computer at home, I would encourage you to show your child how to log in to these accounts at home.  Your child could explore how to type a document in Google docs.

From the Office

The PCCS Green Team is hosting a Green Apple Day of Service event at Prairie Crossing on September 24 from 9 until 11 am.  Come out and help us build storage benches to improve our vegetable gardens!  Click HERE to register for this event, and HERE for more information!

Earthkeepers

Our class will be going to Earthkeepers on September 28 and September 29.  Students need to bring a water bottle, a snack, and a lunch.  There is not a microwave at the field trip.  Please send a trash free lunch and snack that does not need to be heated up.

All students need to be prepared for being outside all day.  Students should wear long pants.  There are a lot of burrs where we are going, so please do not wear sweatpants or fleece.
