Math

We were only able to have math a couple times due to NWEA testing.  We tried to take our test on Wednesday, but there was a problem with the NWEA website.  We then took our math NWEA test on Friday.  The students who did not finish will finish next week.

The couple times we had math we reviewed place value, rounding, and writing large numbers.  Next week the students will be learning about factors and multiples.  They will be making arrays and comparing the factors each number has in common.  Your child can practice skip counting forward and backwards of numbers 2-12 at home.

Reading

This past week most students took the reading NWEA reading test.  Some students were not able to login due to an error in the NWEA testing.  If your child did not take or needs to finish the test, it will happen next week.  This past week we learned about character traits.  The students learned the meaning of some new words including witty, mischievous, bold, and ambitious.  Next week the students will need to find evidence in the text to prove the character trait.  We will also learn about inferring while reading.

Writing

This past week the students started an information piece of writing.  The students read an article about recycling and trash.  After reading the article, they were given a prompt to write about and use information from the article in their writing piece.  The students will finish this writing piece next week.  We will also take our writing outside and work on adding sensory details to our writing.

Science

This past week we finished our magnet unit.  If your child still has the science journal at home, please return it to school on Monday.  Next week we will begin learning about electricity.  The students will be making different circuits.  This has been a favorite unit for students in the past.

Environment

Wednesday we enjoyed quiet spots on the trails of  Prairie Crossing.  The students loved seeing the willow trees and the plants in the area.  One student even saw a snake!

Green Challenge

In September, we will focus on properly disposing of our “stuff” when its useful life is over.  It sounds simple, proper sorting can have a huge effect on our school’s environmental footprint.  We hope you will join us as we embark on this green initiative!  Look for at-home ideas in future newsletters.

Spelling/Word Work

At Prairie Crossing we use Words Their Way spelling program.  Students are placed in spelling groups based on what spelling patterns they need to learn.  It is common for students to repeat sorts especially at the beginning of the school year.  Students have an explanation of the sorts glued into their spelling journals.  Spelling journals should be kept in their binders everyday.  We use the journals and words at school and their is spelling homework.

Academic Recess

Two days a week the third and fourth grade teachers host  academic recess.  Academic recess is used for students to catch up on missing or late work.  The students will be staying inside from recess the whole time.  Sometimes the teachers use this time to have students catch up on science experiments missed due to an absence.  During academic recess the hosting teacher is available to answer questions about assignments.

Book Buddies

The students sat with our book buddy class during the Green Assembly.  On Friday we had the opportunity to read to our buddies.  The 4th graders did a great job being the older book buddy class.  Mrs. Beger read a book about a fireboat that helped on September 11, 2001.  The students in both classes look forward to seeing each other again.
