Reading

The students have been reading Underworlds The Battle Begins.  The students are learning new vocabulary words, answering comprehension questions, and participating in group discussions.  The students are enjoying having whole class discussions where we sit in a circle for a book talk.  We should finish this book in the next two weeks.

Writing

The students have finished a first or second draft of their opinion papers.  They worked on finding examples and short stories to their papers.  On Friday the students looked at their papers to see where they can make improvements.  Some students need to add transition words and other need to expand their paragraphs.  Ask your child to tell you about their opinion paper.

Math

The students have finished Unit 2 and are now working on Unit 3 about fractions and decimal.  Look on my class page for a letter about Unit 3.  We are learning how to identify equivalent fractions.  They learned how to change mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa.  Students will be solving a variety of story problems involving fractions and decimals.

Social Studies

The students have spent one week researching an explorer.  Many students have found this research to be exciting.  They like learning about a different time period.  Next week they will be taking that information and putting it into Google Slides.  The following week they will be giving presentations about their explorers.

School Starting Time

School officially starts at 8:00.  In the Comstock building students are tardy if they arrive after 8:05.  If your child is constantly late to school, he/she is missing out on instructions and lessons.  In my class I am often giving instructions at 8:05 and two days a week we have specials at 8:10.  Carpool starts at 7:40 am and the students are walking in the building at 7:55.  Please consider leaving home earlier to be at school earlier.

Green Challenge Trash Free Lunch

Packing a trash free lunch is good for the planet, and it’s also good for your pocketbook.  The average family in the US spends over $85 per year on plastic bags.  That means you can buy some replacement reusable containers for the ones that mysteriously don’t make it back home and still save money!  Plus, buying in bulk saves money.

A comparison at Jewel of common items showed that you can save a lot over the course of a year by buying large containers as opposed to individually wrapped foods.*

Product Cost per oz. for individual packages Cost per oz. to buy larger sized packages
Chobani yogurt $0.25 $0.19
Apple juice $0.06 $0.03 or $0.04 (size)
Sunchips $0.45 $0.38
Oreos $0.27 $0.19

It looks like only cents, but over a year, it adds up!  Go green and save green!

*Prices rounded to nearest cent.

Message from Administration

As we approach our holiday seasons with upcoming parties and group events, we look forward to seeing you and your children participating in all aspects of the celebrations. In the classroom, staff may come by and take pictures of the students and parents having fun. Please note, however, that some families have opted for their children not to be photographed. If you plan to take pictures of anyone other than your child, please ensure that you have obtained parental permission of the children you photograph prior to taking those pictures. Additionally, some parents may prefer that their children’s pictures not be posted on social media. Please check with them before posting. We look forward to making more wonderful memories with your children and you! Thank you for your understanding.

Halloween

The Halloween party will be Tuesday, October 31.  Students may change into their costumes at school before the parade that starts at 1:45.  The costumes must not include any weapons or have masks that cover the whole face.  Please send a plate for the Halloween party.

Geography Bee

It is time for PCCS’s Second Annual Geography Bee! In November, our class will hold a classroom Geography Bee, to determine a finalist to send to the school-wide competition. Finalists will then compete at our school Geo Bee on Dec 12th. To learn more and help your child prepare, you may wish to use the National Geographic resources, found here. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Turner at rturner@pccharterschool.org. Thank you!
