Reading

The students have finished the book Underworlds, The Battle Begins. The students really enjoyed the book. They liked the suspenseful events in each chapter. Next week we will work on a book project that includes setting, characters, and other important elements of the book.

Writing

The students have completed their first opinion essay. Students worked on adding details and transition words. The students also added a hook, introduction paragraph, and conclusion paragraph. Next week they will write a persuasive letter.

Math

The students have completed Unit 2 about multiplication and division. We will learn more about multiplication and division later this year. Our current unit is about fractions. Students will learn about equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, and the addition and subtraction of fractions.

Social Studies, Nature Time, Science

In social studies, the students have almost finished their business plan for selling applesauce. We will be selling the jars for $5. Next week we will put up posters and pass out flyers.

In science, the students have learned about the properties of light. Students used a flashlight to what happened when we put it up to different objects including wax paper, tin foil, mirrors, clear plastic, and cardboard. Naomi taught the class about light pollution. We took a look around the campus at the different types of lights outside to see what type of light pollution they might create.

In the past two weeks, the students have looked at the changing environment during phenology and quiet spots. It is great to see the students notice the changes our fall weather is having on the environment.

Crew Meeting/ Class Meetings

We have 2 short class meetings almost every day. We have been using this time to get to know each other, practice following rules, talk about things bothering us, for sharing time, and to learn social skills. The past two weeks have been focusing on team building. The students learned a new favorite game called “Frogger”. Ask your child how we play the game.

Other

Please send in fall clothes for your child to keep at school. A few students needed new clothes and only had shorts in their lockers.

Remember to send your child ready to go outside in the morning and the afternoon.  It can be chilly in the morning if we do an outdoor lesson. This may mean sending a sweatshirt and a winter coat.

With the weather turning cooler, we will eat indoors when it is below 40 degrees. Students will be spaced out in the classroom to eat. All students will put on a mask when not eating or drinking. Some students may finish lunch or snack before the time is up and be asked to wear their masks while other students finish eating.
