Reading

The whole group lessons this week were about identifying the main idea and the supporting details using informational books.  I used the book I read the class last week about forests and a book about Native Americans.  The whole group lessons will continue to be about this in the coming weeks.

The students are reading nonfiction books in reading groups.  The students are working on identifying the main idea and the details that support it.  We will continue reading informational books and passages next week and after Thanksgiving.

Math

This past week the class began our unit on multiplication.  The students used repeated addition as a beginning for multiplication.  They also used models and arrays to show multiplication situations.  The students also created a skip counting book.  They had to skip count by numbers 2 to 13.  It was amazing to see how focused the students were on their skip counting.  The students will continue multiplication the next few weeks.

Please remember to have your child play math games at home at least two times a week.  Please indicate your child played the math games above the spelling list under reminders.  I would encourage your child to practice skip counting at home by all numbers 2-12.  This will help him/her memorize their multiplication facts.

Social Studies and Environmental Education

This week the students learned about Native Americans from different time periods.  We started learning more about Plains Indians tribes.  Next week we will be making a parfleche.  Our study about Native Americans will continue after Thanksgiving.

Thursday was an awesome day to go outside for phenology.  Some of the students did not even want a jacket.  We noticed that most of the leaves were gone from the trees.  The students even saw a few flowers still in bloom.

Writing

This week the students worked on a third true story.  The students worked hard to revise their writing to develop the heart of the story and tell it bit by bit.  Next week the students will edit their writing and make a final copy.  After Thanksgiving we will begin informational writing pieces.

Students in third grade come to their conference and sit in the room.  The parents and the teachers do the majority of the talking.  However, students should be a part of the conference.  You can sign up for conferences at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0A4EABA92FA4F49-fall.
