Reading

The students have finished reading their books by Jean Craighead George. They are now working on a book project. The book project includes writing a diary as the main character, a timeline of events, character traits, favorite quotes, and themes. The students will be working on these this week while Mr. Stewart and I continue to listen to each child read to us and answer questions about a short book.

Writing

The students finished their essays about The Raft. It was fantastic to see so many good transition words and details in their essays.

This past week the students started an endangered species research project. They will create a brochure with the information they research.

Math

During math, the students have been learning about fractions including equivalent fractions. Next week they will be learning how fractions and decimals are related. We also have been going over the standard algorithm for multiplication.

Social Studies

The students have finished our unit on geography. They are now learning about laws and the branches of government. The students learned about the inalienable rights and responsibilities citizens have to insure those rights.

Spelling

The students have finished spelling for the year. We need the time to finish projects and do end-of-the-year assessments.

Assessments

On Monday and Tuesday morning we will be doing a reading and writing assessment on the computer called AIMS web. Wednesday afternoon I will be holding a make-up session for missed tests including NWEA and AIMS web.

Mr. Stewart and I are also assessing your child’s reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension individually. This information will be shared with the 5th-grade teachers.

Headphones

All students will need headphones this week. I do have some at school if your child does not have any at home or school.
