Reading

During reading the students are reading their chapter books by Jean Craighead George. During Earth week the students realized that all the books had an environmental focus which is the reason we are reading them around Earth Day. During reading groups the students answer questions about the book and learn new vocabulary words. We will continue reading these books this week.

Writing

In writing during Earth Week the students wrote a letter to themselves about what they did during Earth Week. The students also wrote a few poems about nature during Earth Week.

This past week I reread The Raft, and spent time analyzing the main character in the book. The students developed a thesis statement about the book. Most students are writing about how the main character changed during the book, but others are writing about how the boy loves nature. Next week the students will write an essay based on their thesis statement.

Math

During the last two weeks, the students focused on learning division strategies including area model and ratio tables. These strategies help students really understand division. The students will be taking a test on Unit 6 either Friday or Monday.

Social Studies

In social studies, the students learned about the states in the South region of the United States. They learned the states, capitals, landforms, common crops, landmarks, and common tourist spots. Next week we will learn about the Western Region of the United States.

Biomimicry

During Earth Week the fourth graders learned about biomimicry. They learned that trees use physical barriers, chemical barriers, and resource sharing to survive. Ask your child to tell you about the Wood Wide Web under the ground. Students used this knowledge to build a prototype of something that would protect an object that is important to them.
