Reading

During reading the students are read two different passages about Martin Luther King Jr. The students learned vocabulary words, answered comprehension questions, and found important details that supported the main idea. Next week we will use these passages to do cause and effect and write a comparison writing piece. In reading groups the students are continuing to read different passages, answer questions, and learn vocabulary words.

Writing

The students have all chosen a topic for an informational writing piece. They have taken notes about their topic. Next week we will organize their notes and begin planning the writing piece.

Math

In Unit 4 the students are learning about different strategies for addition and subtraction. These strategies teach students how to solve problems on number lines, break the numbers apart, and the standard algorithm. It is important for students to know their facts quickly so they can be successful in solving larger mathematical problems.

Nature Time, Science

The students have finished their magnet unit. Our current unit is about electricity. The students are learning about how to make different circuits using wires, batteries, and small light bulbs. We should finish our electricity unit soon and have a test in early February.

Naomi taught the class about using a compass and will continue the lesson this coming week. During nature time, we went outside for quick observations for phenology. The students wrote inside in the warmth of the classroom.

Next week we hope to cook brownies using the sweet potatoes from the classroom garden.
