Math
The students finished Unit 4 about measurement and fractions. The test will be coming home in the next few days. Unit 5 is about multiplication and division. Students are learning how multiplication and division are related. They will be solving and writing division and multiplication story problems.
Reading and Writing
During reading, I have met with small groups to read a variety of fiction books. The students learned about themes in books. I read a variety of humorous books including Bedhead, Big Bad Bubble, and The Great Fuzz Frenzy. Next week we will read a few realistic fiction books.
Reading and writing continue to be combined lessons. The students are reading two passages and answered questions about them. They are then writing a multi-paragraph response that includes information about both passages. Next week we will pause these lessons and write an opinion piece about kindness.
Science, Social Studies, and Environmental Education
During science, we almost finished our lessons about rocks and minerals. The students identified minerals based on their properties. We studied glaciers and landforms. Next week Naomi will teach the students about fossils. I will teach about the history of Illinois. We will continue learning how Illinois became a state.
On Wednesday the weather cooperated to go outside for phenology. The students noticed the buds on trees and the changes in the ground. We observed where the snow melted vs where it had not melted.
Spelling
New spelling sorts are given every Friday. Please have your child bring the spelling to school every day. Students will continue to have spelling sorts this coming week. There will be no spelling this coming week.
Remind App and Communication
If you have not signed up for Remind, use this link. https://www.remind.com/join/87h6bak I often see these messages faster than an email.
Outdoor Clothing and Indoor Shoes
All students need to have indoor shoes at school. These can be your child’s PE shoes or another pair of shoes or slippers.
As the weather gets colder, please remind your child to dress for the weather. Students go outside unless it is below zero, pouring rain, or dangerous weather.
Please label all clothing and shoes with your child’s name.
