Math

The students began unit 1 in math. The students are reviewing 2nd-grade math standards about addition and subtraction. The students share the strategies they use to quickly solve addition and subtraction problems. Look at the math Family Letter for more information about this unit. In 3rd grade, I keep the home connection book at school. The whole will come home on nights there is homework. Many days your child will have time to start the homework assignment at school.

Reading

The students have chosen books for their book bins. I did a few interactive read-aloud books including Enemy Pie and Last Day Blues. We will continue working on reading routines next week. Students can bring a book from home to read at school also. Soon I will also do an individual reading assessment with your child during reading.

Writing

The students did two writing pre-assessments this past week including narrative writing and opinion writing. Next week we will begin the writing workshop and learn how writers get their ideas.

Science and Environmental Education

The students had many opportunities to spend time outside since school started. Last Thursday the class learned about Phenology with Naomi. They will be making scientific observations about plants and animals throughout the year. Monday they dug up the potatoes the 3rd and 4th graders planted last week. We also went to our first quiet spots by Lake Leopold.

During our science time, we are learning about the prairie. We have looked at Prairie plants, made prairie “tea”, animals in the prairie, and did an insect sweep. We will continue to learn about the prairie next week including starting a prairie mural.
