Spelling

This week the students used a few letters to make words.  The students tried to make as many words as they could, and some figured out the big word MOUNTAIN.  On Friday, the students were given a practice sort.  Next week I will go over the routines for spelling in 3rd grade.  Based on a pretest I gave them, I will put the students in spelling groups based on their abilities on Friday.

Reading

Students have enjoyed looking at and reading many of the books in the classroom library.  We went over the routines for  Read to Self and how to pick a “Just Right Book”.  I read a few books to the class this week including “Amelia Bedelia’s First Day of School” and “Junkyard Wonders”.  Next week we will continue learning procedures for reading including Read to a Partner and Work on Writing.  Students may bring books from home to read in class.

Math

On Wednesday we began Unit 1 for math.  I have emailed you a letter about this unit on time.  This past week the students reviewed telling time to the nearest 5 minutes on analog clocks and began telling time to the nearest minute.  The students played a matching game with digital and analog clocks.  Next week we will continue continue learning about time including elapsed time.

Phenology

The class learned about phenology, the study of plants and animals over time.  The students have a phenology book that they will be drawing and writing about the changes outside our classroom during the school year.  Many students tasted very sour cherries that are growing outside our classroom.

Science

The students learned about the secrets of the prairie.  The prairie has sun, insects, fire/ash, grasses, flowers, and long roots.  A favorite activity was doing an insect sweep in the prairie and grass to compare the biodiversity.  We also had a plant mystery.  Students were given a description of a plant and had to find the specific prairie plant.  Then they answered questions about the plant based on their observations.  Next week we will continue to learn about the Prairie.
