Ms. Hahn’s Newsletter

August 22, 2021

Spelling

Fourth graders use Words Their Way spelling. This week the students took a spelling assessment to help me determine what spelling skills they need to learn. I will finish up the assessments next week and begin a practice spelling list.

Reading

This week the students listened to a few read-aloud books. They also got books for their book bins. Children are allowed to bring books from home to read at school. During reading, we will continue to focus on procedures for independent reading while the teacher meets with other students. Within the next few weeks, we will be assessing reading levels.

Writing

During writing this week the students wrote an opinion piece about what would make the best pet, a cat or dog. Next week they will write 2 more pieces of writing.  These will be used to help me plan my writing lessons and assess your child’s writing ability.

Math

This past week the students started Unit 1 in math. This is a unit about multiplication and division. They are learning to solve a variety of story problems and show their work. Students will be learning about factors, multiples, composite numbers, and prime numbers. I have students write down the math pages daily in their assignment notebooks. If they finish, students can cross them out. Please see the math newsletter for more information about this unit.

Science/Nature Time

This week the students learned about the scientific process. On Friday they made a hypothesis about whether a skittle would dissolve in hot water or cold water faster. Next week we will do some short experiments and follow the scientific process.

On Tuesday our class harvested the potatoes we planted last spring. On Wednesday morning we went to Prairie Smoke Pond for our first quiet spots. Next Wednesday Naomi will introduce phenology.

Reminders/Other

Please let your child know if there are nut products in the lunch. Your child may eat these during lunch away from other students and then wash their hands.

Please send at least two clean masks to school daily. It is also important that your child have a water bottle daily.

This year the computers will stay at school. They were sent home last year due to the pandemic and the delivery method of education.
