Spelling
Students did list 24 last week. The students had to write sentences with their spelling words. They are working on using a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence and end punctuation. Next week we will be doing sort 25 and the students will be writing sentences with their spelling words.
Reading
This week was a repeat of the previous week with new nonfiction passages. In groups, we are working on reading closely and finding the answer in the article or book. The students are also working on reading fluently and answering comprehension questions. Students are also reading books on Guided Readers. We are working with the students to read closely and how to find the answers in the passage or book. Next week the students will be reading a chapter book sent home before break.
Writing
Students started a group persuasive speech last week to change something at PCCS. Groups worked on having an introduction, reasons with details, and a conclusion. The students should be finished with these at the beginning of next week and begin independent opinion writing.
Math
Last week we began unit 4 and students learned how to tell time to the nearest minute. Next week we will continue to work on Unit 4 with other measurement topics and adding larger numbers. There will be some pages and lessons skipped for now in Unit 4. The math program, Bridges, made some recommendations on how to teach the standards for remote learning.
Science
This past week students learned about animal adaptations and inherited traits of plants and animals. In third grade we discuss inherited traits as related to plants and animals only, not a lot of information about human inherited traits. Next week we will continue learning more about animal adaptations and traits.
Naomi Lesson
Students learned more about renewable resources and nonrenewable resources. They discussed how a pencil uses a lot of resources and not all are renewable. Mrs. Steinbeck is a pencil expert and really enjoyed this lesson. Next week Naomi will be teaching students more about inherited traits.
Absent or Tardy
Just as expected of a typical school year, students are expected to make up work that was missed due to being absent or tardy. Almost all assignments are listed on Google Classroom. The videos of the lessons can be found in Google Classroom. If your child needs help completing an assignment we help them at the end of the day.

Dear Parents,
This year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has developed an online testing platform that will allow schools to host a school spelling bee program, whether children are learning in classrooms or remotely from homes. Prairie Crossing Charter School will be taking advantage of this online platform.
In place of our traditional spelling bee program, we will hold our grade-level and school-wide competition through online spelling tests. The first step to spelling bee participation is for you to register for the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s online testing platform by visiting https://online-test.spellingbee.com (here is a video tutorial that will walk you through the registration process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ThKRsffiFc).
Once you have registered, we will be able to assign the appropriate grade-level test to your child. Your child must complete the test before the given deadline, and these tests can be taken on any device with a web browser, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Each student who chooses to participate will be given a test of 25 words that they must type correctly. They will click a button to hear the word and are given the normal spelling bee information (definition, part of speech, sentence, and origin of the word). The students from each grade with the highest scores will move on to compete at the school level. Our school-level competition will also be administered via this online test platform. Our school champion will then move on to represent PCCS in the Lake County Regional Spelling Bee Program. The Regional Office of Education has not yet determined the method, but they will be conducting regional competitions either virtually, in-peron, or online.
The first step to spelling bee participation is to register at https://online-test.spellingbee.com. Please register at your earliest convenience as we will begin assigning tests to students on Friday, December 18th. Grade-level tests must be completed by Friday, January 15th. If you have already registered in the online testing platform for another child, you can log in to your account and add an additional child to that same parent account. There is no need to register a different email address for each child in your household.
