Week 29

Wow! Even though we had another short week, it was extremely busy. We began brainstorming ways to come up with topics for opinion/persuasive papers. The students thought about problems and solutions to start off their brainstorm, and even helped Mrs. Wagner come up with a solution to the problem that she came up with! Today we talked with our writing buddies to solidify the subjects that we will be writing about next week. In science we finished up our rock and mineral unit this week! We learned how to identify minerals this week by using the Moh’s Scale of hardness and streak tests. Fourth graders are continuing their mixed number and improper fraction unit. Today was our field trip! We went to meet our Waukegan book buddies at the Waukegan Public Library. Our students paired up with their book buddies and learned about constellations, rockets, space ships, satellites, and being an astronaut.

Next week, we’ll be starting our next Social Studies unit – Pioneers! We are going to be starting a pioneer simulation. Students will be split into four groups and working closely with their group  for the next three weeks to see what life was like on the Hacker Trail during the westward movement.  In writing we are starting to write our persuasive/opinion papers. At the end of the week they will be going over a writing checklist with their writing buddies. Fourth grade math will be finishing up their unit on mixed numbers and improper fractions and moving on to adding and subtracting fractions.
