Math Update 4/9

We just began our new unit Data About Us.  The focus of this unit is on statistical investigation.  Students will organize, display, analyze and interpret data.  They will also compute statistics from and describe different types of data displays.  We spent investigation 1 covering name lengths.  We will also be investigating household sizes, pet ownership, cereal serving sizes and nutritional values, distances from home to school, jump rope records, and heights.  Students will construct line plots, dot plots, frequency charts, ordered-value bar graphs, histograms, and box-and-whisker plots.  The students will also learn to compute the mode, median, mean, range, interquartile range (IQR), and mean absolute deviation (MAD) of a data set.  He or she will use these statistics to describe data and make predictions.  We will complete Investigation 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4 this week before taking our Investigation 2 Quiz on Thursday.
