March Green Challenge Assembly!

March Green Challenge Assembly!

Today was our Green Challenge Assembly for March!  We were able to sit with our Book Buddies and learn a lot about how water is used in everyday life.  For example, did you know it takes over 1,000 gallons of water to go through the process of making a pair of jeans?  We also learned that a regular toilet can use as much as 5 gallons when it is used.

We worked with our Book Buddies to come up with some ways we could conserve more water.  We had ideas like taking shorter showers, turning off the water when we brush our teeth, and making sure the dishwasher is all the way full before we use it.

In the afternoon, we revisited the topic of both water and energy conservation.  We started by reading the book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and found out that people don’t always have the ready access to water and electricity that we do.  We brainstormed some of the ways we conserve both water and energy here at school.  This led us to write about the dual-flush toilets and to create light switch covers to remind us to turn off the lights when we are not using them.
