Countdown Begins

As we head into our last week of school before break, we begin our official countdown to Friday. Your students have been working very hard, and we hope everyone enjoys this time off to rest, spend time with family and friends, and re-charge for the new year!
This week in ELA we will finish our “Invention” essays. The three body paragraphs should be written by Wednesday and an introduction and conclusion paragraph should be written by Friday. We will try to provide as much class time as possible to write so that we can guide your students through the process. Some of the writing, however, will need to be done at home. Please reach out with any questions you may have about this five paragraph essay. We had our last visit with Mrs. Rompella last Monday, and we shared our final drafts of our John Muir books. These final drafts were done in a digital slideshow format, and they are AMAZING! We are so proud of your students and the hard work they put into this project. I plan to add the slideshows from each group (there were eight groups in each class) to my webpage so you can see their work.
Spelling tests for Yellow Submarine, Banana S’mores, Australian Hawks, Tacocats, and Disney will be on Tuesday this week.
In social studies, we held our class mascot elections last Tuesday. We are excited to announce that the sea turtle won in Mrs. Neil’s class and the prairie dog won in Mr. Hurwitz’s class. It was fun to see the students campaigning for their nominee and casting their ballot as our Election unit came to an end. We have now begun our study of the National Parks, and we are learning a lot of interesting information about a variety of the parks across the country.
If you haven’t done so already, please return the permission form and payment for our Field Museum field trip by Friday, 12/21. We are looking forward to learning more about biomes and ecosystems on this trip. You can view and print the 5th Grade Permission slipĀ here.
Thank you in advance to those parents that have offered to bring in snacks or have volunteered their time for our holiday party on Friday. We are looking forward to this fun event!
