We happily welcome the month of October with a few exciting events at school. This Tuesday, October 3rd, we will have our second Green Challenge Assembly this year. Feel free to join us at 9:00 for this assembly. In honor of last month’s Green Challenge, Recycling, and to enrich our new science unit, Conservation and Sustainability, both 5th grade classes will be taking a field trip to the Lake County Recycling Center. Mrs. Neil’s homeroom will go on Friday, October 13th and Mr. Barber’s homeroom will go on Monday, October 16th. Both classes will leave campus at 12:30 and return to campus around 2:30. We are looking for drivers for this trip. Please let us know if you are interested and available to drive and how many students you can take in your vehicle. Look for permission forms coming home soon; there will not be a fee.
This week we are moving on to Chapters 7 and 8 in Esperanza Rising and the comprehension questions for both of these chapters will be due next Tuesday. These questions can be found on Google Classroom: Esperanza Rising Novel Unit, Round 5. Slides 3 and 4 follow Chapter 7 and slides 5 and 6 follow Chapter 8. A short research project for Esperanza Rising was assigned last Thursday. Ask your child which topic they chose for this Powerpoint project! A list of websites for research as well as a grading rubric were passed out to the students on Thursday as well. These projects will be due on Friday, October 13th.
We will also have our 2nd spelling test this Tuesday. We were so impressed to see many students score 100% on their first spelling test last Tuesday. Any student with three 100% scores will be moved ahead to the next higher spelling group. Please remind your student to use the study activities to prepare for their tests (and earn extra credit points).
Mrs. Neil’s homeroom will meet with their book buddies, Mr. Smith’s class, this Wednesday. It will be our first time together, and we are excited to get to know them! Just a reminder that we will not have school this Friday, October 6th due to a teacher in-service and Monday, October 9th due to the Columbus Day holiday.
