Welcome Back/Update (1/6/16)

Happy 2016, awesome PCCS families! Keep an eye out for midterms, coming home with students this Friday.

Here is an update on what we will be working on in the coming weeks:

ELA: We are beginning a poetry unit themed around artist Charley Harper. Here is a slideshow with a nice display of Charley Harper’s nature-inspired artwork. This week students will be examining Harper’s work, as  well as accompanied poetry. Next week we will be focusing on literary devices and selecting a topic for students to design their own poem and art. Later, the 5/6 grade-band will be hosting an art walk where families can view students’ work (in February, more details TBA).

Math: Students are wrapping up mastery of rules for dividing fractions and then will moving into multiplying fractions next week.

Social studies: Students have been completing individual tasks for our “Empires” unit. The work coming in has been exciting to see. There are some examples in the Gallery (see the tab above), under the title “Tasks within Empires”. We will be examining cuneiform writing this week and continuing activities next week. The unit will wrap up with a short-response assessment and a “simulation day” where students will get to utilize points they have earned  within their tribes so far this unit.
