Update October 16, 2016

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

Crazy weather this week!  Warm for the beginning, first frost on Thursday, and now we are near 70 degrees…

This week we had a really great time at Book Buddies with Mrs. Berger’s Kindergarten class.  Here are some adorable pictures of us working with them on their October Challenge:  Eat Real.

We began our Eat Real Challenge with demonstrating the difference between real food and processed food.  Students have an Action Plan to complete at home.  The due date is October 24.

Academics this week:

ELA:  Readers’ Workshop:  We will complete Underworlds:  The Battle Begins by the middle of the week.  The end of the book project will be a slide presentation.  Students will use Google slides to create a summary of the main points of the book.  Students will work on this only at school and will be given ample time to do it in class.  If they miss reading, there will be make-up times offered.  The due date will be October 20. Spelling Core words:  leaves, lay, size, wild, weather, miss, pattern, sky, walked, main.  Content words are from our Mythology unit:  herculean, atlas, arachnid, narcissism, echo.  In Writers’ Workshop students will work to use powerful endings in their writing and will revise their writing uses different “lenses”.  An example of a lens might be to look for a place to add a simile or a metaphor.  Another lens could be to look for a place to add meaningful dialog or to remove dialog that doesn’t move the story along.

Math:  We are beginning a new section of Unit 1 of the Model Math curriculum.  This week students will use currency to solve division problems.  I will introduce partial quotients and column division.  The partial quotient steps will be outlined in the math notebooks.  Students will be able to model the strategy for you on Monday night using the notes.  On Tuesday students will practice column division in their math notebooks.  To see how to do this watch this youtube video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jKZcwV7VzI.  Then we will use area and array models to solve division.  On Friday we will continue to practice these strategies.

SS:  This week we are going to continue with mapping skills then we will have several lessons to support the Green Challenge: Eat Real.  Students will learn about the high sugar and fat content of processed foods and learn a bit about portion control.  We plan to watch a snippet of “Supersize Me” at the conclusion of the lesson portion lesson.

PBIS Celebration:  We are going to have a Winn Dixie party on Friday.  We will have a craft activity, snacks, and a movie.

Specials:  All specials will meet as usual with the exception of Wednesday due to the Early Release.  Spanish and PE will be shortened.
