Dear Fourth Grade Families,
Ah, what a relief from the cold this weekend has been. I had the honor of going to Tera Painter’s baby shower this weekend! She is expecting a baby girl in early March. She looked fabulous as usual.
Housekeeping: We are now out of tissues. Please donate a box for the never-ending runny noses! Also, be sure that your child has all the outdoor gear for recess each day. Many students do not have slippers and spend the day in damp socks. Some students come to school without socks, so be sure to check in the boots too!
ELA: The Fountas and Pinnell reading benchmark testing is complete and we will return to daily guided reading groups. All students are going to read classic children’s literature: Superfudge, Stuart Little, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, to name a few. They will be using a “Novel Ties” packet to guide their learning. These packets will cover CCSS for vocabulary and literature standards. Each time we meet I will assign a section of the book and packet to be completed. Students will write the due date on the packet and/or on a post-it and put it in their book. There will be time for them to finish in class; however if they run out of time, they may need to bring the assignment home. Writing: This week will be Grammar Boot Camp with a focus on adjectives. Spelling: We will have the In class Spelling Bee on Wednesday. A winner and a runner up will be chosen. For the sort word homework this week, we will continue with the usual assignments on the usual days. Core words: won’t, case, speak, shape, eight, edge, soft, village, object, age. Content words: energy, conservation, efficiency, nonrenewable, renewable.
Math: We will spend the week reviewing how to solve word problems with a focus on identifying key words, reviewing traditional multiplication strategy, and reviewing partial quotient method. On Thursday we will complete the review study guide for the test on Friday.
Science: We will also wrap up inherited traits this week. On Wednesday and Thursday we will visit the US Energy Administration’s Energy Kids website and complete a “webquest” packet. If the stars and planets are in alignment on Friday, we will begin our next big science unit on Earth Processes: Soils and Weathering.
Be sure to check the homework page for updates.
