Dear Third Grade Families,
What a wonderful weekend! Snow, snow, and more snow! I hope that everyone had a chance to enjoy the fluffy stuff. I think that it goes without saying that students need to be ready for fun in the snow this week during recess time. Please send in warm gloves or mittens. The knit gloves just don’t cut it in these cold temperatures.
Academics this week:
Literacy: This week we are going to use online resources to learn about the history of Valentine’s Day and practice grammar using IXL. Guided reading groups are wrapping up informational reading and beginning new novels. Please follow up with your child to support him or her in completing guided reading assignments on time. We will still have spelling this week with the word test on Wednesday. Core words are: thing, whole, hear, example, heard, several, change, answer, room, sea. Content words: climate, products, border, common, bibliography. Students will either write a short essay on friendship or finish their persuasive essay this week.
Math: In anticipation of school closing last Friday, I doubled up on math last Thursday. This week we will wrap up Unit 5 with some area lessons and test out of the unit on Wednesday. There will be review homework on Tuesday night that will help students prepare for the test.
SS: We will begin to work on the “Homestead Project” on Monday. Students have chosen a colony and they will begin to use classroom resources to become resident experts. All resources will be provided to them and they should not need to work at home unless they fail to use the classroom time wisely or have an extended absence. In that case, they will be required to work at home to catch up. The project has several steps and we will work on them one at a time with in-depth instructions for each step. Remember that on Thursday we will have our Colonial Immersion Day in place of regular academics.
Specials: Please contact each specials teacher for individual updates.
