Update December 3, 2017

Dear Third Grade Families,

What a great weekend we are having with lots of warmer weather for hanging the holiday lights.

We have a lot of activities coming up, so be sure to read all communication from school so you don’t miss anything.

This week is the Holiday Bazaar!  Remember that you have already sent in a dollar per present and students have two shopping times: one for immediate family and one for extended family.  Send in a really BIG and STRONG bag for your child to wrestle the gifts into the car.  We do our best to assure that presents are wrapped and make it out the door, but accidents do happen.

Academics this week:

Literacy:  Reading:  This week we will wrap up our text features lessons on timelines/headings, bullets/icons and students will make text feature posters to hang in the hall.   Guided reading groups continue to work on classic novels this week and next.  Spelling:  Core spelling words are:  something, thought, both, few, those, always, show, large, often, together.  Content words are:  electricity, battery, circuit, closed circuit, open circuit.  Writing:  We will conclude our informational book this week and return to the narrative style and write another personal narrative using the story arc as our graphic organizer.

Math:  We will continue to work in math on measurement.  Students will measure mass (not weight), liquid volume, and solve measurement story problems.  We will have Work Places (math games) on Thursday and Friday.  Students will have math homework on Tuesday and Thursday.  We also found that the students do not have a good grasp on money: identifying coins, counting coins, or making simple change.  If you could help your child practice this skill it would be a huge benefit to him or her.  IXL has practice for all math skills and that is easily practiced at home.

Science:  We are done with our magnet unit and are moving on to electricity.  This week we will investigate electrical symbols, series and parallel circuits, series and parallel bulbs, switches, and solid conductors.

Spanish:  The students have a test on time in Spanish on Friday.  Their notebooks can go home for practice, but please see that they get returned each day.
