Happy Friday,

This week in ELA we continued to study “the hero’s journey”; students also continue to read Percy Jackson. Please note that this Tuesday (date changed from Monday), students will be taking the Reading NWEA test. Math NWEA is on Thursday. In Social Studies, we wrapped up our unit with an argumentative piece regarding which figure from Wax Museum would make a good candidate for president. Next, we dive into Ancient Rome.

Please note:

  • The camping trip is right around the corner; we have determined that the remaining fee for the trip will be $27 per 6th grade student. Please return all forms and payment by May 10th.

  • Students will come home with a waiver for our annual canoe trip today. The trip is on May 30th. Please return the waiver and $15 payment for the canoe trip by May 21st. You are welcome to bundle payment for the canoe trip with the remaining camping cost if you wish to write one check for $42. If you do not wish for your child to canoe on this trip, they may still attend the Skokie Lagoons and participate in class hikes and other activities on land.

  • Every summer, I offer the opportunity to take care of Hershey (our class turtle). If your family is interested, please let me know within the next week so we can coordinate. Hershey will come with everything she needs, and can be left unattended for two or three day periods, if needed.

  • Any kiddos at home still building confidence riding a bike without training wheels? Consider checking out this 2-session club run by our school’s OT, Mrs. Vanderbilt.

  • Our “PCCS Makes a Difference” Committee is organizing a one day Penny War to raise money for water filters for the Benkadi project, to benefit the people of Guinea.  The Penny War will take place on Thursday, May 17th. We will have milk jugs outside of each classroom for students who choose to participate. The class that collects the most money can win a prize! The Grand Prize is a class pizza party (one winner from K-8); 2nd Prize is a popsicle party (one from each building); and 3rd Prize is extra recess (one from each building).
