Greetings and happy “trash-free” October (and beyond),

This week we had an exciting Green Challenge assembly (featuring a few of our students) about the importance of trash-free lunches at school. It included a “Trash”ion Show and cooking demo, with taste-sized servings for all! Students had a great time learning from their peers and enjoying the granola bars they prepared. Next week, students can look forward to our first sessions of “Explore”, which will take place Tuesdays before lunch. Different from last year, students will be rotating to 4 different Explore topics over the course of the year: digital literacy, research skills, keyboarding (to success), and creative writing.

Students presented their findings from our archaeology unit in social studies this week and reflected on the process of examining a culture. A week from today (Thurs, Oct 12), 6th grade students will be participating in Primitive Day. This immersive experience is a long-running tradition that allows students to jump-start their new social studies unit on Early Man (Bones & Stones). Students will travel with 11 peers to the following stations (run by PCCS staff): cave art, satchel making, archery, fire-starting and spear throwing. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the day’s activities. If available, consider signing up here to join the fun and supervise students as they travel to each station throughout the day!

Lastly, the Multicultural Parent Advisory Council would like to take families on a tour of the world. On November 7th they will be hosting a Literacy Night/Taste of the World combination event, using the lens of cultural celebrations that remind us to be thankful. There will be crafts, games, literacy (reading) supports and food! Be sure to get your passport at the door as we travel from 6:00 to 8:30 pm in the Nelson Gymnasium! All students, families and staff are welcome. Please RSVP using the form linked here and let us know what dish you would like to bring for the potluck. Contact Mr. Freeman with any questions (rfreeman@pccharterschool.org).
