Turner Tribune 1/19/18

Hello parents,

Even with a shortened week of school, we were able to accomplish a lot in school this week! In ELA, students completed a text marking sheet on Martin Luther King Jr., began reading their Lit Circle book (there are different books for different students), and have continued writing excellent Current Event assignments. We also had our class-wide Spelling Bee on Tuesday, done by ELA class (rather than by homeroom). Congratulations to Madu and Neil for coming in 1st and 2nd place, respectively, in their ELA class! A big congrats to Ellie too, who took 1st place in her ELA class’s bee!

In Social Studies, we continued our dive into ancient Egypt with a video on the fascinating history and construction of the Pyramid of Giza. Following that, groups of students read about a specific, unique Nome and created presentations for the rest of the class based on their Nomes.

With Mr. Hershiser, students have been creating structures in Science. Their goal is to build a tall structure out of popsicle sticks, toothpicks, and other materials that is held together by hot glue. In addition to creativity, students’ structures will be tested for stability by enduring a “demo earthquake.” With tests taking place today, feel free to ask your child how it went. They have been working very hard on these!

Next week is Spirit Week to celebrate school-choice:

Monday 1/22: Wear Yellow Scarves & Assembly

Tuesday, 1/23: Wear Favorite Sport Team’s Gear

Wednesday, 1/24: PJ Day

Thursday, 1/25: Crazy Hat/Hair Day

Friday, 1/26: School Spirit Wear Day & Judging of The Door Decorations

*We will also be having a door decorating contest within the school, so please feel free to send in any materials that can be used for showing off why PCCS is your school of choice.

Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart is up and running! We are raising money and awareness for the American Heart Association, for research and ways to help those who have heart disease. PCCS students can fundraise online to get more incentives, and get cash or check donations. All proceeds will go to the American Heart Association. Student packets will go home soon, so please look through the new features this year has to offer and how to sign up. If you have any questions, feel free to email Mr. Flinn (jflinn@pccharterschool.org).

Important Dates:

Monday, 1/22: School Choice Assembly & Spelling Bee (8:15 AM)

Wednesday, 1/24: Early Release, 1pm dismissal

Friday, 1/26: Pizza Friday

Have a great weekend!
Ms. Turner & Mr. Hurwitz
