Resources for Selecting “Good Fit” Books (Updated 10/19)

Dear Parents,

As we mentioned in our Friday Feature last week, a few of the students in our class seem to be struggling to find “good fit” books for independent reading. In an effort to help them make good choices, we wanted to share this document of 5th grade Fantasy books with you. It is a list of book titles within a genre we see many 5th graders reading. The list is organized by Lexile number. At Prairie Crossing, we use the Fountas and Pinnell leveling system rather than Lexile numbers. Many 5th grade students will fall into the 775 – 900 Lexile range, but please let us know if you would like us to convert your child’s Fountas and Pinnelll reading level to Lexile. on Friday students came home with an NWEA scoresheet, and under the “Reading” graph is a Lexile range based on their testing this fall. I am linking 2 websites that are useful for looking up book recommendations: lexile.com and book wizard on Scholastic. Both resources allow you to narrow search options by reading level and genre/subject.

Please let us know if you would like further guidance on helping students select a good fit book.

Happy Reading!
Ms. Turner and Mrs. Neil
