November 27, 2016 Update

Dear Fourth Grade Families,

This is going to be short and sweet!

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving break.  Ours was relaxing and peaceful.

Academics next week:

ELA:  In Readers’ Workshop students will continue to work in guided reading groups on books with a Native American theme.  Please check your child’s assignment notebook for this week’s spelling words.  For grammar practice students will work on combining predicates and correcting run-on sentences.  In Writers’ Workshop we will continue our work on persuasive and personal essays.  Students will learn about a writing process called “flash-drafting” where they will write a short essay without worrying about revising and editing until later.  The focus will be on content rather than mechanics.

Math:  Early in the week students will practice long division with two-digit divisors, then move on to word problems. When we move to word problems we will begin with addition and subtraction word problems in order to support instruction.  Then we will add multiplication and division word problems and finish the week with multi-step word problems.  We will test out on multiplication and division word problems in about a week and a half.

SS:  In Social Studies, we will learn about the Illini tribes who lived in Illinois before the Sauk, Fox, and Potowatomi. We will study their cultures, lifestyles, and spirituality.  The concept of sustainability and respect for the environment within the native cultures will be covered.

Environmental Ed: This week students are scheduled for Phenology in the Comstock gardens.

Specials:  There will be a Spanish test on November 30.  Topics tested will be the parts of the body and pronouns.   Be sure to help your child practice for the test!
