Dear Fourth Grade Families,

Last week was a busy one…

  • We all started new novel studies and met often during the week.
  • We learned longer division problems with dividends in the 1,000’s.
  • We took a hike to the beach on Take a Hike Day.
  • We began a new writing unit on opinion writing form.
  • We learned about the prehistoric people in Illinois.

And we practiced our bartering skills with a trading experience based on Cahokia…thumbnail_img_2304thumbnail_img_2302thumbnail_img_2301thumbnail_img_2300

Coming up this week…

ELA:  In Readers’ Workshop, students will continue to read their guided reading novels.  Continue to check individual assignment notebooks to see if your child has any left over reading.  There will not be spelling this week; however students will have vocabulary study.  This week we will have a vocabulary “test” in place of the spelling test on Tuesday.  In Writers’ Workshop students will revise their “ice cream” opinion piece.  We have been reading the Bluestem books and just finished Tuck Everlasting.  We will begin a new Bluestem book after Thanksgiving.

Math:  This week we will continue to practice long division.  We will focus on dividing by multiples of 10 and touch upon dividing four digit dividends by two digit dividends (not multiples of 10).  After Thanksgiving we will move on to division word problems.

SS:  We will spend a day visiting the :”Projectarchaeo” website.  If we have time we will begin our study of Illinois Native Americans and compare and contrast Woodland and Plains Native Americans.

Parent/Teacher Conferences:  Students will prepare for their conference by completing a goal plan to share with you during your conference.  In preparation for conferences, please prepare questions in advance.  Our time together will be limited to a total of 20 minutes, so please be prompt.  I will set a timer so we can stay on schedule.

Fun Winter Stuff:

The Owl Prowl is on December 20 from 5:30 – 7:00.  We will meet in Muir Hall for a story, then a hike, and return to the school for hot chocolate.  RSVP to Naomi.

Here are two fun activities for families to enjoy over the next few weeks:
