Newsletter – Week of 2/17/20
Although it was a short week, the students were still busy learning and working hard. Read about the highlights below:
The students learned about Magic ‘e’ this week, and they will continue to practice that when there is an ‘e’ at the end of a one syllable word, the middle vowel will say it’s name. Also, your child will be assessed on the Trimester 2 sight words next week. Continue reading and practicing with your child at home – all of their hard work is paying off, as they become true readers!
In writing, the students are wrapping up their narrative pieces. Narrative stories are true stories, and the focus is on writing about real things, editing one’s work, and adding details through pictures and words.
The students are also continuing to document the weather in their weather journal. Several days each week they copy a sentence from the board using a Handwriting Without Tears lined page. Not only are they learning about science, but they are also practicing how to make their handwriting more accurate and easy to read.
Math has brought a focus back to shapes and how to distinguish between 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. The students are learning how to describe and sort shapes based on their dimensions(curved or straight lines, solid or flat shape, etc). In addition to shapes, a new work station called Race You to 15 Cents was introduced this week. This game helps students focus on adding, counting and counting on, and the value of a penny, nickel, and dime.
