Here is an update for the upcoming week, December 8-12, 2014
ELA: Our CAFE strategies for this week are: Infer and support with evidence, use text features, and tune in to interesting words. Students will use Illinois, Our Home, for their text when working on these strategies. Core words: government, baby, grass, plane, street, couldn’t, reason, difference, maybe, history. Content words will be from the reading. Look for them in the assignment notebook. Spelling homework will follow the usual sequence this week. In writing we will finish up the legend using our spirit animal guides. On Thursday students will begin a “how-to” writing assignment, also called explanatory writing. They will write about a winter game or activity which will require them to do some additional research over the weekend to be sure that they have all the steps recorded for the activity.
Math: This week in math we will continue our work on 2 digit multiplication. We have been using Cluster Problems, Starter Problems, and our new “Big Array” method to solve problems. This week we will add finding easier problems to solve a difficult problem and writing story problems. In addition to these strategies, students will continue to make estimates of 2 digit multiplication problems. Homework will be assigned on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. The math packet will be due first thing on Friday morning.
SS/Science: Our mask making went well (see photos posted on Friday). This week we will build up the facial structures of the animals. If your child needs any specific materials from home, he or she will record this in the assignment notebook. Please check for these notes. By Friday we hope to paint! They should be all done and hung by December 17th. We will continue our work on animal adaptations by viewing and responding to a wolf video and a whale video if we have time. Thanks to Sophie’s dad and my stepson for sharing Sustainable Human website with me.
Holiday Party: Put on your calico sunbonnet and join us on December 19th! In keeping with our tradition of providing a full-day immersion experience on the last day of school before our holiday break, we are planning a Little House (Pioneer) Day on December 19. Pioneer dress is always welcome. We will provide stations in the 3rd and 4th grade rooms in the morning, a pioneer feast at lunch, the Sarah Plain and Tall movie, and square dance in the gym. We will need help with corn husk dolls in our room in the morning. There will be two shifts: 8:15-10:00 and 10:00 – 11:40. Students will have recess at 11:45. Jo Walsh will be working hard on the feast, 12:15-1:15. Then the teachers will run the afternoon, with the help of Music and PE. If you are interested in making corn husk dolls, let me know. If you would like to help in other rooms, that is possible too. Contact Jo Walsh for providing food or lunch support. This is always such a special treat for the kids.
Have a wonderful week!
