Dear Fourth Grade Families,
Two weeks and counting!
This will be the last full week of “regular” academics. This week will be business as usual! Read below for more information.
ELA: Reading; This week we are going to study drama and combine reading and writing to create scripts from Fairy Tales. We will use “Where the Wild Things Are” as our mentor text and script. Students will work in small groups to create a Readers’ Theater script from a well-loved Fairy Tale. Hopefully we will be able to perform for our Book Buddies in Kindergarten next week. Spelling: This week is the last official week of spelling. Here are the extra words: Core: twenty, broke, nice, effect, paid, motion, myself, divide, supply, laid. Content: dimension, formula, rectangular, prism, volume. In Writers’ Workshop we are going to finish our first poems and continue with “Hate That Cat”. I am amazed at the wonderful poetry that the kids have produced. WOW is all I have to say!
Math: This week we will have our final Rocket Math benchmark timed test. We will also complete the unit work on area and perimeter. Students have used the Power Polygons and geoboards to understand the concept of area. I want to be sure that they understand it using graph paper too. They will work to compare and contrast area and perimeter by constructing rectangles. At the very end of the week, students will touch on volume of solids (rectangular prisms). We will test out early in the last week of school.
SS/Science: Students will finish their world climate project this week. They will make a brief presentation at the end of the week.
Service Learning Project: We are going to harvest the cold frames on Thursday and the greens and radishes will go to local food pantries. On Friday we will plant the squash and corn. We will hold off on the beans for now. The Interactive Garden is coming along nicely. Students decided that activities would be housed in mailboxes for all to stop and enjoy. The mailboxes are ordered and will be installed during the last week of school.
Earthkeepers: Remember that the S Key is due in one week on June 1, 2015.
