May 10, 2015 Update

Happy Mother’s Day!

I know that each and every mom will have a very special day today.  I want to extend a VERY BIG thank you to everyone who made our Native American Immersion Week special.  This was a very special and unique experience for our students.  The respect and courtesy that our students exhibited all week is a true testament to their ability to appreciate other cultures and beliefs.

Field Trip:  We go to Old World Wisconsin on Wednesday, May 13.  We will leave immediately, so please be sure that all students are on time.  Send in a trash free lunch.  No microwave will be available.  Dress for the weather!

Academics:

ELA:  In Readers’ Workshop this week we are using Patricia Palocco’s Thundercake for a mentor text to focus on CCSS Literature strategies:  reading closely to make inferences and support conclusion, summarizing key details and ideas, analyze how characters change over the course of a text, understand text structures, and assess point of view.  Spelling sort words will be sent home on Monday.  Core:  familiar, onto, imagine, blow, quick, law, lie, final, rise, loud  Content (Old World Wisconsin Words):  industrialization, entrepreneur, transportation, business, wool carding.  In Writers’ Workshop students will finish using punctuation in dialogue and begin the poetry unit using Hate That Cat by Sharon Creech.  Our first day will be Thursday if students want to bring in their own copy, but it is not necessary.

Math:  We will continue our mini unit on using protractors, measuring angles, and drawing angles will this week.  Students will have homework on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.  Students may supply a protractor from home if they have one.  I do have class sets, but students will need to return them to me if they need to borrow them for homework.

SS/Science:  Students will begin a project at school that involves graphing climate data and comparing two sets of data.  I would like to have students use in-class resources for this and complete the project totally in school.

Earthkeepers:  Remember that students should be working on the Earthkeeper S key at home.  The final essays are due on June 1, 2015.

End of Year testing schedule:

PARCC:  May 11, 12, and 14.

NWEA MAP test:  May 19, 22.

Dates to Remember:

5/13     Old World Wisconsin

5/20     Early Release

5/25     No School:  Memorial Day

5/26     School Board Meeting

That’s it for today!  Enjoy your week.
