Dear Fourth Grade Families,
We are back from the Green Schools Conference. It was an amazing venture. Buzz words: sustainability education, place based education, National Green Schools Society. There were many populations represented from teachers and administrators to architects to green technologies. Our presentation was very well-attended and offered practical, ready-to-use ideas for teachers.
ELA: In Readers’ Workshop this week we are beginning a shared reading of The Van Gogh Cafe’ by Cynthia Rylant. This is a collection of stories centered around the “magic” of a theater turned cafe. We use this for making predictions and inferences as each short story ends with a cliff hanger. Guided reading groups will finish their classic novels by the end of the week. Spelling: core words: weight, thin, stone, hit, wife, island, we’ll, opposite, born Content: canyon, delta, landform, river mouth, valley. During Writers’ Workshop students will continue their work on their mysteries, hopefully having a good start on their final copies by Thursday.
Social Studies: We have completed the chapter in Illinois Our Home on Life on the Frontier. In addition to reading and discussing the text, they have studied primary documents to evaluate first hand experiences. We will wrap up this segment of Illinois settlers on Monday with a short assessment. Soon all students will read Little House on the Prairie as an integration of social studies and literature study.
Science: We will return to our Earth Processes study with landforms: their definition and creation. We will make landforms in the classroom to understand the powers of erosion and deposition.
