# March 13, 2106 Update

I hope that you all enjoyed Student Led Conferences last week.  The students worked hard to prepare their portfolios and practiced with their peers.  Over the next few weeks we will send home the rest of the Reading Notebook and the collection portfolio so you will have an opportunity to view more work.

Last week we had a new math activity and the kids loved it!  Students worked in small groups to create fraction exhibits for a fraction museum.  Here are some of the pictures:

Alex and Zander working on one third.

Alayna, Rania, and Piya creating their display.

Riley, Noah, and Reese.

Displays:

ELA:  In Readers’ Workshop students will work on realistic fiction novels in guided reading and informational texts in CAFE using Time for Kids magazines.  Spelling words are:  Core:  half, red, fish, plants, living, black, eat, short, United States, run.  Content words:  ramp, rotate, axis, variable, outcome.  In Writers’ Workshop students will work on personal narrative stories.  We will focus on choosing a good story idea, plot development, dialogue, and using temporal words to move the story along.

Math:  Next week we will work on fraction basics:  parts of one whole, showing fractions with number bonds, building fractions greater than one whole, using fraction strips to reason about fraction size, and using different-sized fraction models to represent a whole.  We are also identifying fractions of a group of objects as well as fractions on number lines and defined areas like circles and polygons.  We are still using Eureka math for fractions and there will be homework each night.  Keep practicing the Rocket Math!

Science:  Next week we will investigate motion in systems: wheel and axles, twirly birds (like helicopters), and tops. Students will also go to the Wax Museum in Mrs. Spoonmore’s room on Thursday afternoon.

Specials:  We will get all our specials in this week!

PARCC:  We will be administering the PARCC on paper to the third and fourth graders in mid April.  We will send home the schedule as soon as it is finalized.

Dates to Remember:

3/21 – 3/25 Spring Break
3/30 Farm to Table
4/2   Father Daughter Dinner Dance

For Spring Break,  I will be traveling to Maine for my mother’s 80th  birthday!  If I do not have the chance to see you before Friday, have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
