Hello October

As we welcomed October with a full moon on Thursday, we continue to celebrate this wonderful fall season. Our Green Challenge for this month is “Balance Screen Time and Green Time” and we’d love to see how your family chooses to do just that! Please send us any pictures or videos of the many special ways you spend “green time,” and we’d be happy to include them in our all school assembly on October 15th.
In ELA this week we will revise and edit our Explanatory Essays on a problem facing our community or state. At this point, all five paragraphs of the essay should be written for the assignment in Google Classroom. Now, we will spend some time with the revision and editing process. Any changes necessary will be made directly on the document in Google Classroom. This document will then become our “final draft” to turn in on Wednesday, October 7th. Spelling tests will also be taken on October 7th through our online program, Spelling City. Due to our long weekend holiday, new spelling words will not be assigned this Wednesday. New lists will be sent home during the Materials Pick-Up and will be posted on Spelling City October 15th. Our second spelling test will be on Wednesday, October 22nd.
New Digital Reading Logs have also been assigned in our ELA Google Classroom. Every day, we ask students to read 20-30 minutes either during free times throughout the school day or after school hours. Each weekday over the next two weeks, students should log the title and author of their books as well as the time spent reading. This assignment will run for two weeks and students will be awarded 10 points for completing the log. We’re excited to see what they’ve been reading!!
We have begun reading our Thirteen Colonies skits in social studies and learning some important new vocabulary along the way. Notes will be taken in our social studies notebooks as we create a glossary of unfamiliar terms. Practice for the skits will continue through this week and performances will be done over Zoom when we return from the Columbus Day holiday.
This Wednesday, both classes will be visited by Mrs. Gernandy and Mrs. Meyer during our 8:30 Morning Meeting. This will be our second opportunity to talk about any feelings students may be having during this Remote Learning time. If anyone has any specific concerns they would like to discuss personally, please reach out to the 5th grade team or Mrs. Gernady or Mrs. Meyer. A quick way to reach out is the I Need Help form available to all families. On Wednesday, we will also have our next materials pick-up. Please remember to bring back the bag and orange folder you picked up on Friday, September 25th. Thank you for your cooperation with these materials exchange dates.
