Do You Trust a Groundhog?

So, the groundhog predicted an early spring! We’re really hoping he is right this year. At school we will try to make our own sunshine as we put the messages from PCCS CARES week into practice. This time of year can be difficult as winter illness and gray days can take their toll. We’ll continue to remind our classes of ways they can lift each other up and support those who need an extra helping hand.
In ELA we will start our new spelling sorts on Monday and begin our Literature Circles on Tuesday. Your children have been placed into small groups of 3-5 students and they will work together to complete the packet they will receive in class. Each week all students are responsible for doing their assigned reading – this can also be counted on their Reading Logs – and fully completing their assigned “role” for the group. Directions for each role have been discussed in class and are also found in their packets. These packets will be collected at the end of our unit, so it’s important they complete their page(s) each week to stay on track. For Literature Circles to run smoothly, it is vital that each group member does their part. Any student that is unable to keep up with the reading or fails to complete assignments before our group meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday will be given an alternative book report assignment they will complete on their own.
In social studies, we will finish our PowerPoint slides and begin rehearsing for our presentations. These presentations will begin on Thursday and Friday. The rubric for the presentations can be found in the National Park Guidelines at the end of this email and shared on Google Classroom as well. I’ve begun to look at their social studies reports, and I’m impressed with the hard work your children put in. This was a challenging assignment, and the commitment the students showed to their work was amazing.
A quick note about Valentine’s Day. Rather than purchasing individual Valentines for classmates, students are encouraged to share a Valentine message to the whole class on one card we will display in the classrooms. In 5/6, we don’t have a Valentine’s Day party. Instead, students will enjoy a school wide PBIS celebration on Valentine’s Day and we will have a 5/6 party the day before Spring Break to welcome (hopefully) the seasonal change.
