This week, we are having an extension of Peace Week where we are really trying to focus in on celebrating our unique abilities. We are coming at this though our morning meetings and some special lessons throughout the week this week. For example, the morning question for Monday was all about how we and our friends are alike. On Tuesday, we looked at how we and our friends are different…and how that is a good thing. During the rest of the week we will be looking at how differences are a strength when working together.
Today, we read the book It’s Hard to be a Verb by Julia Cook. We were introduced to Louis and how he is unique because he finds it hard to be focused and just feels like he needs to do something. He does not like that it gets him in trouble sometimes and makes the grownups around him grumpy. His mom stops and talks with him and gives him several strategies to help. He uses those strategies and – even though it is hard – he is able to focus on what he is doing. He comes home to find out his mom went through some of the same things when she was a child.
We used this book to start to look at how we are all unique. Some people found it easier to think of something unique about themselves than others, but everyone did a great job. We will be continuing to explore this the rest of the week.
