A Long Weekend

I hope this email finds you enjoying our long, snowy weekend! I am looking forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday to begin a short, but full week in 5th grade. As you may have already heard, we are excited to have a new Instructional Assistant in our classroom! Scott Stewart, a PCCS parent and a familiar face around campus, will be moving from his position as substitute staff to a full-time, permanent IA position in 5th grade. Mr. Stewart introduced himself to both classes last Thursday, and the students gave him an enthusiastic welcome. We are looking forward to working together, and I’m sure it won’t be long before Mr. Stewart feels at home in our room.
In ELA this week, we will continue our exploration of President Washington and President Lincoln and cast our “vote” for the better president. Given the accomplishments of both presidents, it was difficult for some students to make a decision. A graphic organizer was passed out last week, and the students should complete that before Wednesday. We will then use this organizer to compose three strong paragraphs to support our choice. On Tuesday, Disney, Squishy Bananas, Yellow Submarine, and Australian Hawks will have a spelling test. Some students recently moved into a new spelling group, so please check with your students to see if their group has changed. And finally, the Connect Five Reading Log #3 is due on Tuesday. Your child should have read at least 100 minutes over the past week as well as answered five response questions (in Google Classroom) related to the book they are reading.
In social studies, we will have our first states and capitals quiz over the New England and Middle Atlantic States on Wednesday. This Northeast region quiz will be followed by four more quizzes before our test over all 50 states. Students should expect a quiz on the Southeast region next Monday, 2/25. Please ensure that your child is keeping up with the maps that have been assigned in class. These maps should be colored, labelled, and glued into their social studies notebook. Not only are they great learning and study tools to have for this unit, they will also be collected for a grade after our final test.
