Dear Parents,

Wow… it has been a busy week in 5th grade! The students have been working really hard this week and we appreciate the effort they’ve put in to get so much work done before we leave for our winter break. Next week will also be busy – and fun – with the festive classroom and school wide events planned.
MANY, MANY thanks to the PSO for the hard work their volunteers put into the Fun Food Friday lunch today – it was thoroughly enjoyed by both the staff and the students!!
ELA News:
  • Finished our Week Four Book Club slide
  • Added ideas to our brainstorm for our Persuasive Essay
  • Took our spelling test for Week Three
  • Shared our creative writing in “Author’s Chair”
  • Next week we will discuss symbolism in literature and finish our Book Club novels
Social Studies News:
  • Took our test on the Road to the Revolutionary War
  • Read about Jane Goodall in Time for Kids
  • Annotated the text for the Battles of the Revolutionary War
  • Organized our notes into an informational chart
  • Next week we will do some research on the major battles to present to the class
Shin Math News:
  • Determined absolute values of rational numbers
  • Ordered rational numbers and their absolute values
  • Plotted points on the coordinate plane
  • Identified points in the 4 quadrants of the coordinate plane
  • Identified points on the x-axis and the y-axis
  • Next week students look at using appropriate scale on the coordinate plane and find distance between points

Psimaras Math News:

  • Took Decimal Place Value Checkpoint Quiz #2
  • Displayed tenths, hundredths, and thousandths on a number lines
  • Rounded numbers to the nearest whole, tenths, and hundredths
  • Will work on a study guide to prepare for the Unit 3 Decimal test on Wednesday

Science News:

  • Distributed Super Savers Kits to families
  • Discussed different ways families can conserve energy in their homes
  • Reviewed information for Monday’s Science Test
  • Will introduce the new Biomes Unit
Music News:
Our talented fifth graders will make a video recording for the Holiday Concert next Wednesday, December 15th, from 9:00 until 9:40. We’ve encouraged students to dress up or wear festive attire on that day. They have been working really hard with Mrs. Canfield and we’re excited to see their performance!
