Dear Families,

We hope you all are able to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather! Mrs. Gernady and Mrs. Meyer talked to our homerooms this week about coping with stress. Being outside is a natural stress reliever. Whether it’s observing the colors, feeling the warmth and breeze, or walking the dog. We can do many things to do an inner reset.

This week, we are looking forward to recognize Veteran’s Day on Tuesday in our Zoom meetings. There will not be a school-wide assembly this year. If you have a picture of a veteran you know and would like to share, please bring it to your morning Zoom meeting.

ELA News: We are halfway through our novel studies on Esperanza Rising and The Orphan of Ellis Island! The Book Club slides for Weeks 1-3 were due this past Thursday. Grades will be posted for those three slides before the trimester ends. Spelling activities are due by Wednesday and tests will be given at the start of class that day. Our first set of words for the 2nd trimester will also be assigned on Wednesday. On Fridays we have been working on our Personal Narratives using memories from a recent vacation or short trip. Last Friday we worked on adding dialogue, description, and sensory details to these stories. It has been so interesting to read about your adventures with family and friends.
Social Studies News: In social studies we have been using the articles in our most recent Time for Kids magazine to learn more about the election process and the Electoral College. The 2020 Presidential Election has given us a lot to talk about in recent days, and we’ve had some really interesting discussions. In order to gain a better understanding of the Electoral College, we have been playing a dice game to “win” electoral votes for the candidate from each of our parties, the United Party or the States Party. Both races are well underway and we hope to have our final results by early next week. The unit test on the Thirteen Colonies has been graded and returned to the students. Anyone who would like to re-take the test should come to Office Hours to review the material. After that, the re-take can be taken during Guided Learning Groups in Mrs. Neil and Mrs. Zimmerman’s Zoom. All re-takes must be done before the end of the trimester on Friday, 11/13.
Science News: In science we played a fishing game to simulate the importance of our choices in conserving our natural resources. Afterwards we discussed how that simulation relates to the three pillars of sustainability: economy, environment, and society and their interconnections among them. We are continuing our study of conservation into Trimester 2. Refer to the new science packet sent home in the students’ supply folders. A vocabulary quiz will be given on Wednesday to recap our recent topics. Students can refer to their flashcards and the Quizlet to study.
Math News: Students took the Fractions math test on Friday. Thank you for printing the test at home and returning it to school on Friday. These tests will be returned to the students early this week. They will have an opportunity to redo any incorrect problem for half points back by Wednesday. Miss King and I encourage students to attend Office Hours for extra help and questions. Our topics this week include a fraction review, better buy problems, and will begin the study of decimals.
Accelerated Math Update: The math committee has been working to finalize details and communications with families. We will be communicating any change in math class and details this week.
Parent Teacher Conferences: Parent conferences will take place on Zoom on Monday, November 24th during 2-7pm and Tuesday, November 25th during 2-4pm with students’ homeroom teachers. An invite will be emailed home this Friday via the Sign-Up Genius website. Let us know if you have any questions.
