Math

The students began Unit 1 in math last week along with taking a pre-assessment in order to find out more about their current skill levels. The students will be continuing to work through this unit throughout this week and the upcoming ones. I have the students leave their Home Connections books at home, bringing me the homework sheets as they are completed. I will try and allow for little to no homework in math on the weekends.

Reading

Students have selected their books for their book bins. I have been reading an interactive-read-aloud book called Mangoes, Mischief, and Tales of Friendship throughout the week. I will complete it this week and continue to read other stories throughout the week. I will soon be conducting an individual reading assessment during reading time.

Writing

Over the past week, the students did two writing assessments including a narrative and an opinion writing. The students will finish the final assessment and start a writing workshop where we will discuss ideas for writing.

Science and Environmental Education

The students had many opportunities to spend time outside since school started. Last Wednesday the class learned about Phenology with Ms. Naomi. They will be making scientific observations about plants and animals throughout the year. We also went to our first quiet spots by Lake Leopold.

During our science time, we are learning about the prairie. We have looked at Prairie plants, animals in the prairie, and did an insect sweep. We will continue to learn about the prairie next week including starting a prairie mural.
