Hello 6th grade families,
It was an exciting week, as we began our new routine in Hybrid learning. Thank you all for your partnership and patience as we continue to make improvements along the way! Two announcements before diving into summarizing the week:

We have a new staff member joining us: Ms. Kirby is a 6th grade assistant who will be available to help students. Please include her on any future messages to the team, akirby@pccharterschool.org

A clarification for all Wednesdays: students are required to check-in on each core subject Zoom before being allowed to work more independently (each of their custom schedule documents reflect which Zoom they should join)

In ELA: students reviewed book check-out procedures, started a current events analysis, and learned about the difference between connotation and denotation. Next week, students will pick up with a new Greek/Latin roots packet, and start our study of Dystopia in preparation of new literature circle novels that begin Feb 22nd.

In Social Studies: we started bridging the content from our past units together by studying terms in relation to river valley civilizations. Students looked at common terms and made hypotheses about what life may have been like 5,000 years ago. Next week, we will be transitioning into our Egypt unit, starting with an intro to unit vocabulary.

In Science: This week, we learned about the similarities and differences between animal and plant cells. We reviewed terms like cell membrane, nucleus, vacuoles, and mitochondria. The option for extra credit was given this week if students want to create a model of both cell types with items from home. Parents, if you have questions, please let me know. On Wednesday this week, students with missing Science work were encouraged to check in with Mrs. Wright to get help and get caught up.

In Math: We took a small break from our green Math workbooks to reinforce some important concepts. Math A was exploring the coordinate plane with reflections and labeling points. Math B worked through solving expressions using integers. This week was also a great opportunity to catch up on missing work. The second trimester ends 2/26.
Important Dates
- Mon Feb 15: No School, Presidents Day
- Fri Feb 19: *Materials pick-up (remote only), now self-serve any time 8:30-2:30pm at the gym
- Fri Feb 26: End of T2; Early Release 1PM
*Note: Families with 6th graders in-person do not need to attend Materials pick-up, since materials can be given to them on campus. However, please return your child’s canvas supply bag ASAP so we can use them to prepare materials in advance. Thank you!
