Why Waste Water?

Mr. Hershiser's 5th and 6th grade class began an innovative Service Learning Project in the 2009/2010 school year, making creative, unique and inspiring custom rainbarrels. Through the sale of these rain barrels, Mr. Hershiser's students raised almost $1,000 for water conservation efforts on our campus in one year alone! The project was so successful, they have decided to continue it, and are now in their 3rd year of creating these unique and highly effective rainbarrels.

Every rainbarrel is custom-designed by these Prairie Crossing Charter School students. You can choose from one of the designs below or ask for a new design of your choosing. If you already have a rainbarrel and you would like to have it painted, our students would be glad to do that too! Prices for custom-painted rain barrels range from $80-100; designs on pre-owned barrels range from $20-40, depending on the complexity of the image. To order a rain barrel, please contact Mr. Hershiser at chershiser [at] pccharterschool [dot] org or at 847.543.9722.

Why Rain Barrels?

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "a rain barrel is a system that collects and stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams… Lawn and garden watering make up nearly 40% of total household water use during the summer. A rain barrel collects water and stores it for when you need it most — during periods of drought — to water plants, wash your car, or to top a swimming pool. It provides an ample supply of free 'soft water' to homeowners, containing no chlorine, lime or calcium making it ideal for gardens, flower pots, and car and window washing. A rain barrel will save most homeowners about 1,300 gallons of water during the peak summer months. Saving water not only helps protect the environment, it saves you money and energy (decreased demand for treated tap water). Diverting water from storm drains also decreases the impact of runoff to streams. Therefore, a rain barrel is an easy way for you to have a consistent supply of clean, fresh water for outdoor use, FREE." (http://www.epa.gov/region3/p2/what-is-rainbarrel.pdf)

How do I use a Rain Barrel?

To use a rain barrel, you have to first fill it up. When it rains, the rain will fill up your rain barrel. Our rainbarrels have a small screen at the top, where the water will seep in. Whenever you choose, you can hook up a hose to the barrel and water your garden or lawn with it. It's that easy!
(Note: Only some of our barrels can hook up to a hose, so if you like this option, please order it!)
